Joan Williams, Painter

Having been a fine arts major in college and showing dogs for thirty years, it seemed only natural to combine the two. My pet portraits of dogs, cats and horses, reflect my love of animals. When I am working on a portrait, I feel that the animal becomes mine for a short period of time and a bond is created. My portraits are executed in pastel, oil or gouache and I choose to work in a detailed, realistic manner. There is no better way to remember a beloved pet. I also enjoy creating whimsical scenes using animals to tell a story. “Moon Dance”, “Swan Lake” and “Holiday Musicians” are examples. The creation of these stories are great fun and allow me to stretch my imagination, while I let the animals become the story tellers. Along with pet portraits, I also do commissioned house portraits, which are done in gouache. I have a line of greeting cards featuring different breeds of dogs. I am a member of the Artist Registry at the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, where I have exhibited in juried exhibitions. Being a docent at the St. Louis Art Museum has put me in touch with many different artists, where I can study their styles and learn about them as people, who have travelled their artistic roads in life.
