As an artist I find myself drawn to shape and form and texture. I find the play of metal against a natural element extremely appealing. I strive to create a fluid or playful form using pliable wire and rigid stone, beach glass or sea-worn shell.
I enjoy the challenge of seeing possibilities in elements taken for granted. I like the idea of using a surprising element like a sea-worn piece of shell or weathered glass as the base for some of my pieces. However, what is needed sometimes for the piece I have in mind is the clean look of shiny glass or a gemstone cab.
I usually create intuitively, inspired by the look and feel of the base element being used. Sometimes it is the look and feel of the glass or shell while other times the wire dictates what the piece will become. It may be close to what I imagined and other times I let the wire guide me--it seems to have a mind of its own. Color and texture are important. I play these up until I get the look that best complements the overall look of the piece.
Most of my pieces contrast elements and texture like glass against metal, metal against shell. Since enjoying wearable art involves both visual and tactile experiences, I feel my work needs to draw a response of “reach out and touch” to be fully experienced by admirer and wearer alike.
