Watercolor by Maggie McCarthy

My favorite medium is transparent watercolor.  I paint on 140# Arches Bright White cold press watercolor paper, using wet on wet, glaze, lift and direct painting. I have been painting in watercolor for over 30 years and I am continually challenged by that white piece of paper.  My best painting is always the one I do tomorrow.

My inspiration comes from the places I have been or my imagination. My favorite content is the landscape and land with water in it is even more seductive.  I am always looking for mystery and feeling in the patterns, rhythms and colors I see in nature.  I strive to have a conversation with the watercolor medium. Sometimes I am in control and sometimes it is, taking me in unexpected directions.  I am always open to what it has to say.   If you come to watercolor with a strong plan, a confident hand, and some flexibility, it will always sing for you.

I always title my work, knowing that a successful title can expand the viewer’s understanding of the work.
