Michael Frank

Michael Frank has been painting for over 35 years. He has developed his skills from attending many artist workshops and some college, but mainly from studying the works of the “Hudson River School” artists of the mid to late 1800’s. Some of their landscape locations were very exotic, but it really didn’t matter. Because of their attention to detail, coloring and strong direction of light, you would think that you were looking at a magical place, while in a magical moment. That’s what I strive to achieve.

Michael considers himself a representational luminous painter of landscapes and seascapes. He usually starts with the grisaille method of painting with a monotone painting over a white or bright yellow canvas.  He then starts adding layers upon layers of colored glazes to give his work a glowing effect. His subject matter comes from his travels all over the world, but mainly from his hometown of St. Louis Missouri. Michael feels “Forest Park and Shaw’s Botanical Gardens offer unlimited sources for subject matter.”

He also has developed a series of “Little World” fantasy paintings where the imagery comes more from his imagination. These depict nature with birds, turtles, toadstools & even fish, against a mysterious fairy tale like setting of forest brooks and waterfalls. His “Forest Never Sleeps” series depicts small creature life in the forest with a night sky and full moon backdrop.
