"When I hold an egg in my hand I see a miracle, I see the life that could emerge from this lifeless yet perfect package. Not unlike many ancient and even modern cultures, I see the egg as a symbol of life, hope, good fortune, prosperity and new beginnings. I hope that my eggshell sculptures inspire that same feeling of amazement and wonder. I have loved creating art for as long as I can remember. Since discovering eggshell artistry in the early 1970's I was repeatedly drawn back to it. I love to work with this natural canvas which comes in many forms and shapes and challenges my imagination every day. I use only natural eggshells from reputable domesticated sources. They are never collected from the wild. (Did you know that most of our native birds are protected and that it is illegal to collect their eggs, feathers or nests?) Each eggshell is unique with its own individual characteristics. Few people realize that eggshells can be carved, sculpted, painted, dyed, scratched, etched, decoupaged, embellished with jewels, embroidery, beads... the list can go on forever and is limited only by the artist's imagination. I sculpt, etch and embellish them with a variety of hand and power tools to gradually transform each one from a simple, lifeless eggshell into a new life as an eggs-quisite piece of art. The inspiration for my Faith and Art truly comes from seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary." Teena won "Best of Show" for 3-D Art at the 2010 Art Fair at Queeny Park. |
