Blooming Artist Project
Greater St. Louis Art Association

GSLAA Calendar of Events

May 25 Monthly Meeting Program Program

Alex Johnmeyer, will talk about the Blooming Artist Project and her career as a painter.

Our May program will be the painter Alex Johnmeyer.   As co-chairman of the GSLAA sponsored Blooming Artists Project, Alex will tell us about the project and show us photographs of the exhibit’s reception held earlier this month at 1900 Park Gallery.

Alex will also tell us about their journey as a painter in the St Louis area. Alex creates paintings based upon their photography. The scenes and still-lifes she creates are either naturally occurring or created in the artist's studio. She meticulously recreates the photography in either a combination of watercolor, gouache and ink, or acrylic sometimes combined with different texture media.

“I feel my artistic style is a mix of photo realism and expressionism.  When one of my paintings shows texture, whether actual or implied, I feel it pulls the audience into the piece.”

A graduate of Missouri State University (Springfield, MO). Alex started their company, Super Keen Creations, LLC selling commissioned paintings to art collectors and St. Louis businesses.  Alex began showing her work in galleries throughout St. Louis. She actively participates in charity benefits throughout the year, including "Wall Ball", a charity auction to benefit Artscope, and "Art of PAWS", a benefit for the St. Louis Effort for AIDS as well as her involvement the Blooming Artist Project.

June 22 Monthly Meeting Program

How to Package, Insure and Ship both 2D and 3D Art by
Mary Berry Friedman

Our speaker will be portrait and figure painter Mary Berry Friedman. She will be talking about how to package, insure and ship both 2D and 3d art.  Mary has a business that ships large framed mirrors and art and products. She is now expanding her business to provide shipping services to other artists.

Mary will also talk about her career as a portrait, people and figure painter. Vibrant color and striking light and dark contrast are prominent techniques utilized in Mary’s portraits and figures. Going beyond a portrait, she strives to convey character in a look, a glint in the eye, a mood  that compels the observer to speculate about the story behind the life portrayed. While Mary’s own inspirations create a piece, she wants nothing to prohibit the viewer from entering in emotionally via their own stories and experiences.

“My work is strongly influences by social injustices toward women the world over. My latest series ‘The Focus is on Her’ is intended to soothe, enlighten, encourage, celebrate and ultimately champion not only female beauty, but strength, bravery, resilience, everything that oppression attempts to dominate and extinguish.”

GSLAA Juried Exhibition at 1900 Park Gallery
July 1 through July 29

GSLAA Juried artists will have an opportunity to be part of a month long art exhibit at the 1900 Park Gallery (in the Lafayette Park area).  It’s free to enter, but you must be a juried GSLAA member.  1900 Park Gallery does take a 30% commission on all sales.

A special GSLAA Exhibition Reception will be held on Friday, July 7th for artists.  It will be open to the public and we encourage you to invite family, friends and customers to the opening.  The reception will run from 6:00PM to 9:30PM.

All mediums, 2D and 3D art, including small objects such as jewelry can submitted to the exhibit. You may submit up to two pieces of artwork, but because of space limitation we cannot guarantee both pieces will be exhibited.  For small objects, there will be two locked display cases available.

3D artists will be required to provide their own pedestals to display their art.  The GSLAA will have a limited number of pedestals available, but they must be reserved in advance.  Call Garry  (314 610-2353) for details on pedestals.

All 2D art must be appropriately framed and ready to hang with wire hangers. Sawtooth hangers will not be allowed.  Due to wall limitations 2D artists will be limited to showing two images not larger than 20x24 framed, or one piece no larger than 30x40 framed. Smaller sizes are encouraged.  Again, due to space limitations we cannot guarantee both art works can be hung.

All artwork, 2D and 3D must have artist identification attached.

Art work may be delivered to Garry McMichael’s Studio at 1926 Allen Avenue on Friday June 30th or to 1900 Park Avenue between 10:00AM and 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 1st.  Art work arriving after 12:00 (Noon) will not be included in the exhibit. We will have a form each member must fill out including artwork title, artist name, medium and price.  Artwork may be marked “Not For Sale”.

The GSLAA Juried Exhibit will run through July 28th and artwork must be picked up on Saturday July 29 between 9:00AM and 12 Noon.

Space is limited, if you plan to exhibit your art, please send Garry an email:  garry@garrymcmichael.com

1900 Park Galley is located in south city just east of Lafayette Square.

The GSLAA Summer Picnic is July 27th

We’re planning the annual GSLAA Summer Picnic for our July meeting that will be held on Thursday, July 27 from 6:30PM to 9:00PM.  Like last year, it will be held at

Bunny and Moisy Shopper’s Residence
21 Aberdeen Place
St. Louis, MO 63105

It’s free to all GSLAA members, their spouses and special guests.  The GSLAA will provide Bogart’s famous Bar-Be-Que and all the fixin’s for barbeque sandwiches.  We’ll also provide drinks. We ask our members to bring a side dish (veggies, appetizers or deserts).

It’s simply one of the most fun things the GSLAA does every year so put it on your calendar NOW!!

We do need to know how many members and friends will be attending, so please RSVP by sending an email to Garry McMichael,  garry@garrymcmichael.com
